Quick answer
The City of Surrey does not run its own recycling depots. Surrey's two main drop-off sites are Metro Vancouver's Central Surrey Recycling and Waste Centre (6711 154 St, Newton) and North Surrey Recycling and Waste Centre (9770 192 St, Port Kells). You can reach both at 604-681-5600. Many recyclables are free to drop off, but garbage and mattresses cost money. For beverage containers, go to a Return-It depot to get your deposit back.
This guide explains where to take recycling and hard-to-dispose items in Surrey. It covers what each of the two Metro Vancouver centres accepts, opening hours, fees, where beverage containers and soft plastics go, and where to take electronics, paint, batteries, light bulbs and mattresses.
Details come from Metro Vancouver, the City of Surrey, Return-It and Recycle BC, checked on September 25, 2026. Hours and fees change, so check the official pages at the bottom before you drive.

This centre has a large free recycling depot. Metro Vancouver lists these free items:
- Residential only: glass bottles and jars, mixed containers, paper and cardboard, flexible plastics, and white and coloured foam packaging (Styrofoam)
- Appliances, power tools and electric outdoor power equipment, including fridges and freezers
- Electronics (e-waste), batteries, light bulbs and light fixtures, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and thermostats

| Saturdays | 8:00am to 6:00pm |

It is closed December 25 and January 1. North Surrey's free recycling list is shorter than Central Surrey's. It includes batteries, books, butane canisters, clothing, corrugated cardboard, nitrous oxide cylinders, glass containers, large appliances and electric outdoor power equipment, fridges and freezers, metals, oil filters, plastic containers, plastic film and bags, propane tanks, and recyclable paper. Metro Vancouver's North Surrey page does not list electronics, paint or light bulbs, so take those to Central Surrey or another depot.

Return-It depots for bottles and cans
Return-It is BC's deposit refund system for beverage containers. It lists every depot on the "Find a Location" map on return-it.ca and in the Return-It app. Two examples in Surrey:
- Scott Road Bottle Depot: #2, 12111 86 Ave, 604-543-0606. Open 9am to 6pm daily. Also listed for electronics, small appliances, paint, and packaging and paper.
- White Rock Return-It Depot: 3221 140 St, Surrey, 778-294-9919. Open 9am to 5pm daily. Also listed for electronics, batteries, small appliances, lighting and paint.
Both depots show as closed on holidays. Accepted items vary by depot, so check the depot's page before you go.
Recycle BC depots for packaging
Recycle BC runs a network of depots where you can drop off household packaging and paper for free. Most accept paper, cardboard, plastic and metal containers, cartons and paper cups, non-deposit glass, foam packaging and flexible plastics. Recycle BC says flexible plastics and foam packaging can only be recycled at a depot, not curbside. Use the map on Recycle BC's "Find a Depot" page, or the Recycle BC app.
For anything else, search Metro Vancouver Recycles (recycling.metrovancouver.org) or call the Recycling Council of BC hotline at 604-RECYCLE (604-732-9253).
What not to bring (or bring separately)
Metro Vancouver checks garbage loads for banned materials and charges surcharges if it finds them:
- An $80 minimum surcharge applies to loads with banned hazardous items or banned product-stewardship items.
- A 50% surcharge applies to loads with banned recyclables.
- A 100% surcharge applies to loads that are more than 20% foam packaging.
- An unsecured load gets a surcharge of 50% of the tipping fee, up to $50.
Banned from garbage: asbestos, car bodies and parts, creosote-treated wood and railroad ties, liquids and sludge, mattresses, propane tanks, gypsum, hazardous waste, and single objects over 100 kg, 2.5 m long or 1.2 m wide. Inert fill (soil, sod, gravel, concrete, asphalt) over 0.5 cubic metres per load is also banned. Separate recyclables into the free area first. Put mattresses and drywall in the paid recycling area.
Safety: Propane tanks, flammable liquids and other hazardous waste are banned from garbage. Drop them off in the free recycling area at Central Surrey instead of mixing them into a garbage load.
