When to call 911 and when to use a non-emergency line

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) says to call 911 when you need an immediate emergency response. Its medical examples include chest pain, trouble breathing, loss of consciousness, signs of a stroke, a severe allergic reaction and major bleeding.

Surrey Police Service (SPS) says to call 911 when:

  • a crime is in progress or has just happened, such as a fight, a break-in or an impaired driver
  • there is an immediate threat to someone's life or safety
  • there has been a serious accident
  • someone is in crisis

Use the non-emergency line, 604-599-0502, when no one is in danger and no suspects are present. SPS examples include a noise complaint, vandalism, or a vehicle broken into while you were shopping.

Safety: Both SPS and BCEHS say that if you are unsure whether it is an emergency, call 911. When you call, be ready to give the exact location, including any apartment number and access code.

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, SPS says you can text 911, but you must register for Text 9-1-1 before you need it.

What Surrey Fire Services can help with

  • Free smoke alarms: if you live in a single-family home, duplex or townhouse without a working smoke alarm, Surrey Fire Services will install a free battery-powered one. You can also request a free HomeSafe inspection of your alarms and fire safety.
  • Burning rules: open burning, including backyard fires, fire pits and chimineas, is not allowed in Surrey. Propane and natural gas fire pits are the exception. Burning permits are only for farm properties.

Tip: Surrey Fire Services suggests testing your smoke alarms once a month, changing batteries every six months and replacing each alarm every 10 years.
